China is expanding the Bayan Obo rare earth mine in Inner Mongolia by 50% with a $74 million investment, according to project details published by China Northern Rare Earth Group (CNREG). The project is intended to increase ore processing capacity at the site, the company said.
Bayan Obo is listed in official records as the world’s largest rare earth mine. The expansion is part of a broader effort to secure supply of critical minerals used in high-technology industries, according to company statements. CNREG, which operates the site, said the investment will modernize extraction and processing infrastructure.
Bayan Obo has been a major rare earth source since its discovery in 1927, with large-scale mining beginning in the 1950s, according to geological surveys. Deposits of this type form by hydrothermal replacement of sedimentary carbonate rocks, with fluids likely derived from nearby carbonatite intrusives, according to geological references [7].
Specialty metals, including rare earths, are important in high-technology manufacturing, while some elements such as gallium and indium are recovered as byproducts of smelting operations [6]. The mine produces a significant portion of China’s rare earth output. Beijing controls about 80% of global rare earth processing, according to a 2025 report [3].

Rare earth elements are used in permanent magnets, electric vehicle motors, wind turbines and defense systems, according to a published analysis [9]. G7 leaders have pledged to limit China’s share of their rare earth imports to no more than 60% by 2030, according to an agreement announced at the group’s summit [11]. The expansion will bring Bayan Obo’s rated capacity to roughly 50% above current levels once completed, according to the company. Further mine expansions may be considered depending on demand projections, according to company statements.
